How to Make Offsite Meetings More Engaging

Periodically, teams of all sizes come together for a few days, away from their regular responsibilities to plan for the future of their business. Team offsite events hold so much promise to unlock creative ideas, foster teamwork, and create a lane for value creation.

And yet if they are not well constructed, they present a real risk to hindering progress in a business. So, what’s the difference between offsite events that succeed and those that fall flat?

There is value in getting a team out of the office for a change of scenery. Inspiration and creative thoughts on building businesses can be the product of these experiences.

Choose an interesting venue. Think beyond a hotel ballroom. Consider unusual locations. Museums, yacht clubs, cultural centers, and sports facilities may offer conference space for groups of all sizes, and they usually include immersive activities and tours. An interesting setting can inspire teams to take a fresh perspective about their careers and your business. As example, an unusual setting can be most effective for a marketing team to brainstorm on ideas for a new product launch.

Arrange sports or other physical activities. Give employees a chance to have a bit of fun with a sporting event or other physical activity; a great way to encourage team bonding and at the same a break from work. In fact, a physical break can make employees more productive and creative by giving their minds a chance to play.

Hold an educational session on a non-work topic.  Consider a subject matter expert who teaches a class on cooking, mixology, or painting. Educational sessions also stimulate creativity outside the realm of employees’ day-to-day jobs through a learning experience that inspires different thinking about their challenges and opportunities

Take the team to an event. Give your team a chance to unwind at an event after the meeting. In doing so, you will give everyone something to look forward to and a chance to bond with each other. For instance, take your employees out to a play, a comedy club, an art exhibit, a boat ride, or a concert to reward them for their hard work. You can spice up networking events by injecting activities such as trivia contests and awards.

What’s Your Approach?

A productive and engaging offsite meeting can truly change the way business is run. A successful offsite can align executives, galvanize corporate performance, and strengthen the company’s position in its industry.

Your offsite event should not be a necessary activity.  It should instead be an experience they look forward to participating in with you and their fellow colleagues.

How do you make offsite events memorable and still valuable? We’d like to hear what you think.
