Director of Business Development, Santa Barbara

Travel + Leisure named Santa Barbara to its 50 Best Places to Travel in 2026, and this Iowa native is not surprised.

When I first arrived in Santa Barbara, I knew it was special. It wasn't just another beach town. It was a hidden gem like nowhere else on the west coast.

Now, as PRA's Director of Business Development in Santa Barbara, I get to share this destination with clients every day. And here's what I tell them: if you want a European Riviera experience without leaving the U.S., this is it.

By the Numbers

  • Sunshine: 300+ days per year
  • Location: 90 minutes from Los Angeles, 40 minutes from wine country
  • Wineries: 200+ in the Santa Barbara Wine Country region
  • Nickname: The American Riviera

Santa Barbara stands out as an event destination—here are my top 5 reasons why.

1) The Beauty Just Hits

Santa Barbara is stunningly unique. After a major earthquake in 1925, the city intentionally rebuilt with a Spanish architectural style: red-tile roofs, white stucco buildings, hand-painted beams, and custom tiles that appear everywhere from the courthouse to the local Target.

When attendees step off the plane, they feel it immediately. The bougainvillea, the exotic plants, the Spanish charm, it's like stepping into the Mediterranean without leaving California.

This matters for events! Natural Beauty or Historic Architecture isn't just a nice backdrop; it does the real work. Whether you're hosting a reception at a historic estate in Montecito or a waterfront dinner overlooking the harbor, the setting does half the work for you.

2) The Culture and People Make It Real

Santa Barbara is a true melting pot. We have Spanish influence from the early settlers, Mexican culture from when this area was part of Mexico, and Native American heritage from the Chumash people. You can taste it in the food, from mom-and-pop taquerias serving fresh tamales to fine dining restaurants showcasing local Uni and oysters.

But the people make the real difference. My suppliers from the winemakers, chefs, florists all love being here. They love their craft, they love the story of this place, and that passion translates directly into the experiences they create. Top hospitality, top service, every time.

When I take clients on site visits, they always say the same thing: "We can't believe how much you've shown us in one day." That's because Santa Barbara isn't just one beautiful street, it's layer after layer of distinct experiences, all within a compact, accessible destination.

3) The Ease of Effortless Elegance

Here's something I love about Santa Barbara: you can be in flip-flops at a beachside cafe sitting next to someone in formal wear or next to a celebrity for that matter. From Oprah to Prince Harry, many stars live nearby in Montecito, because they can go to the grocery store in sweatpants without paparazzi. It's not Beverly Hills. It's lived-in, approachable luxury.

For groups, this balance is perfect. You can surf in the morning and attend a black-tie gala that evening. Your attendees feel comfortable and relaxed, but they're still getting world-class experiences. That combination—casual elegance—is hard to find anywhere else.

4) The Variety of Vineyards, Coastlines, and Highlands

We're just 40 scenic minutes from Santa Barbara Wine Country, which boasts over 200 world-class wineries. There’s also the ocean for sailing, surfing, or beachfront events. Or the mountains for hiking, outdoor team-building, and stunning backdrops. It’s all here, it’s all easily accessible.

I've done everything from wine-blending workshops in the vineyards to sunrise hikes followed by farm-to-table brunches. The variety means I can customize programs for any type of group—tech companies, financial services, associations, incentive trips and create something that feels unique to them.

Plus, with over 300 days of sunshine, you're almost guaranteed perfect weather—invaluable for outdoor programming.

5) The Standard for Intentional Design and Execution

Santa Barbara is one of the top wedding destinations in the U.S., which means our vendors—florists, linen companies, rental houses—are operating at an extremely high level. The bar is set by brides and grooms with unlimited budgets and high expectations, and that raises the quality for corporate events too.

My experience in interior design and hospitality taught me about service and anticipating needs. I bring that same intentionality to every event we produce here. Every detail—from the freshest flowers to the most elegant table settings—is considered. No group will leave unhappy if they're in our hands.

We collaborate closely, stay hands-on, and connect clients with the best suppliers and elevated design Santa Barbara has to offer. That's what we bring to the table.

You Won’t Want to Leave

When I do site visits, clients always end up on Zillow® looking at real estate. They say, "We want to live here." That's the magic of Santa Barbara. It's not just a place to hold a meeting—it's a destination people fall in love with.

If you're looking for a location that combines European beauty, California sunshine, world-class food and wine, and genuine hospitality, this is it. Santa Barbara delivers—and we make sure every event reflects the passion and care that defines this place.
