Inside The Legal Summit: 3 Insights for Planners
Author
At the annual The Legal Summit, an educational and networking forum supporting the unique needs of legal meeting professionals in Scottsdale, I was glad to join fellow Destination Management Company (DMC) leaders on a panel focused on what partnerships with DMCs can truly deliver.
With 65 legal planners in attendance—representing 40 different job titles from Chiefs of Staff to Marketing Coordinators—the conversation went far beyond logistics and design. It was a chance to explore what drives meaningful partnerships with a DMC.
While trends like wellness, sustainability, and AI integration were hot topics, my focus was on something more fundamental: how legal planners, who often work in isolation without traditional peer networks, can leverage destination management expertise to create programs that truly resonate.
The symposium was PRA's fourth year participating, and the insights were eye-opening, confirming that legal planners are hungry for authentic partnerships that go beyond vendor transactions. I’m glad to say I was able to show them what's possible when local expertise meets strategic thinking.
I shared my knowledge and learned what meeting planners in the legal industry really need. These are my top three insights:
1. Destination as Meaning, Not Just Backdrop
When planning events, it's tempting to focus only on beautiful design elements—the graphics, the centerpieces, the photo-worthy moments. But attendees are traveling differently now. In their personal lives, they're seeking experiences off the beaten path, avoiding oversaturated tourist spots. They're bringing those same expectations to professional events.
The opportunity? Use destinations intentionally. We shared an example of incorporating a traditional Native American hoop dance into an Arizona program. The hoop represents the never-ending cycle of life—symbolizing continuity and the interconnectedness of people and ideas. That single cultural element transformed the entertainment into a meaningful experience that resonated with attendees, long after they left.
When you discover the cultural threads that make a destination unique and weave them into experiences, you can create genuine connection. At PRA, we call it the power of place.
2. Education Over Sales
One of my biggest insights from the panel? Many legal planners have never worked with a DMC. I met one planner who executes 20+ major events annually, but didn't know how destination management could support her overwhelming workload.
It’s not about budget constraints—it's about awareness. My focus is on the value proposition that PRA brings risk management, local insider knowledge, cultural insight, and those blind spots that keep planners up at night when working in unfamiliar markets.
The win? Conversations that led to real partnerships.
As the pre-event reception sponsor, we created an Arizona marketplace with local purveyors, specialty cocktails, and handcrafted experiences. For the 40% of first-time attendees, it was an immediate demonstration of what authentic local expertise looks like.
3. Community Creates Opportunity
Legal planners operate differently from traditional meeting professionals. They don't have standardized titles or clear peer networks. One firm's "Director of Events" might be another's "Chief of Staff" or "Marketing Assistant." They plan significant programs but often navigate challenges alone.
The Legal Summit has grown from five attendees at its California inception to a twice-yearly gathering because it offers something these professionals desperately need: community. The conference now maintains a private LinkedIn group where planners share job postings, troubleshoot challenges, and build lasting professional relationships.
For DMCs, this means showing up as strategic partners, not just service providers. It means understanding their unique challenges and offering support that extends beyond a single program. Since the summit, we've connected with planners on upcoming Arizona programs and continue to build relationships.
The Bottom Line
The future of destination management is about going deeper—understanding destinations at a cultural level, recognizing shifting behaviors, and creating experiences that feel both elevated and authentic.
Whether you're a legal meeting planner, corporate event professional, or destination partner, the message is clear: authentic collaboration is powerful. Let's keep building it together.
