Just over twenty years ago, I accidentally wandered into event design. I was working in the same office building as a Destination Management Company when one of their associates asked in passing if I could help staff two large, back‑to‑back programs. I joked that I could hold a sign if needed. Instead, that casual request turned into a role as a program coordinator.

That day changed everything. Fast forward two decades, and I'm standing in a converted industrial warehouse on Valentine's Day, watching hundreds of guests walk through an entrance I imagined and brought to life, and I thought:

This is magical...

Steampunk Romance

Our client’s vision was to create an event on Valentine’s Day, acknowledging the day while making it appealing for a group that wouldn’t be with their significant others. And do this in an industrial space with raw concrete, metal, and exposed brick.

This is where experience design married the impossible—edgy grit and soft warmth.

We landed on a concept that would make the warehouse and Cupid both proud: Industrial Valentine. Think steampunk edge meets romantic vibes. Think chandeliers in shipping crates. Think velvety shadow boxes with vintage time pieces. Think about making people forget they're not with their Valentine because they're too busy being wowed.

Collaborative Magic

With more than three years invested in this client, we've learned something crucial: the best ideas don't come from one brain. They come from the collision of creative minds who trust each other.

Okay, but how do we actually make this happen?

My role as Strategic Creative Director on our Central Creative Team—a creative powerhouse—puts me squarely in that collision zone. I'm a bridge between seemingly impossible concepts and the inevitable question: “Okay, but how do we actually make this happen?” The answer lives at the intersection of execution and imagination, where my operations background, shaped by years of on-site production, load-in schedules, and vendor logistics, meets my creative heart.

For this event, I worked with multiple vendors who brought their A-game, featuring stunning florals, lounge groupings, and industrial pieces. Every conversation was a dance: Here's the vision. Here's what I need. What's possible? Can we push it further?

And here's the best part about working with partners who understand the assignment: they'll custom-fabricate a sequin bar because they know the client won't settle for anything less.

From Rendering to Reality

The entrance was everything. A towering 10-foot arch framed by custom crates filled with cascading chandeliers and lush florals—an art installation you had to walk through to enter. An arrival moment that was also Instagram gold. I design for that sharp intake of breath when someone walks through the door.

Inside, we created a nitrogen station bar draped in rich fabric, transforming a functional space into its own elevated VIP lounge. Shadow boxes lined the walls with velvet and vintage clockwork. Soft details whispered a sense of warmth throughout the industrial space.

You can spend months perfecting every detail, but if the room is dark, what's the point?

Lighting is non-negotiable. You can spend months perfecting every detail, but if the room is dark, what's the point? Proper lighting doesn't just illuminate—it transforms.

The Reveal

There’s nothing better than the moment the client walks into the space. This client was electric; they were as enthusiastic as my team. They trust us with creative freedom, give honest feedback, and the crowning achievement is watching them walk in as their faces light up.

Nine times out of ten, it’s better than I imagined.

Standing there on Valentine’s Day, watching guests flow through that entrance, seeing them pause to take photos, and hearing the buzz of excitement, that’s the payoff. Nine times out of ten, it’s better than I imagined.

A Valentine's Day Love Story

So, here's my Valentine's confession: I'm absolutely in love. With the work. With the challenge of creating experiences. With the collaboration between my colleagues, home teams, and the partners who help us turn it all into reality. With clients who dream as big as we do.

This Valentine’s event wasn’t just about romance. It was about the romance of creation itself. The way an industrial warehouse can become a love letter. The way strangers become collaborators, then friends. The way a wild idea in a brainstorming session becomes a 10‑foot entrance installation that makes people stop and stare.

After 20 years, I still feel a spark when the rendering becomes reality.

Experience design isn't just about creating beautiful spaces; it's about creating moments that matter. Moments of arrival. Moments of wonder. Moments where industrial grit and Valentine’s Day collide, creating something neither could achieve alone.

That's the magic. That's the love story.

And I wouldn't trade it for anything.
